The idea
The Qing butterfly pei, a symbol of joy and long life, reissued as a hinged butterfly that can be worn as a pendant or a brooch.
Not a reproduction
The original is a flat carved nephrite butterfly. This piece keeps the wing silhouette but is a three-dimensional white-jade and 18k-gold form with a movable hinge; it references the motif, it is not a copy.

Where it begins
A jade pendant carved in the form of a butterfly. Insect and flower subjects became common in Qing jade work, cut from flat plaques with the outline shaped and the surface carved in low relief.
