The idea

From a Tang gold phoenix ornament once sewn to silk, a lightweight phoenix brooch in raised gold and enamel.

Not a reproduction

The inspiration is a Tang beaten-gold phoenix sheet (jin feng shi pian), a court emblem. This brooch is cast 18k gold with enamel fill — a new object in the spirit of the motif, not a reproduction.

Where it begins

Textile Ornaments(?): Pair of Phoenixes

Sui and Tang Dynasties · Pendant

A pair of sheet-gold ornaments cut and chased with confronting phoenixes, excavated in China and dated to the eighth century. Sheet-gold work of this thinness was typically applied to textile or leather rather than worn directly against the body, which is why the museum records the function as uncertain.
