The idea
A Ming jade hairpin reduced to a single willow stem with a carved leaf finial — a hair pin meant to be noticed, not to hold a crown.
Not a reproduction
The source is a Ming nephrite hairpin (zan). This pin keeps the long stem and a leaf tip in gold, but is sized and weighted for modern hair; it is inspired by, not made as, the antique.

Where it begins
This is a hairpin in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, dated by the museum to the Ming Dynasty. The recorded medium is jade (nephrite). Its recorded length is 16 cm long. Accession number 65.86.171, alfred W. Hoyt Collection, Bequest of Rosina H. Hoppin, 1965.
Description follows the museum's own record; it is not an independent essay.
